Start with the job, not the machine size
The right coffee bean sorter is the one that can meet the plant’s real acceptance standard at the required working output without removing an unreasonable amount of good coffee. Channel count, camera specifications and headline capacity are useful only after the sorting task has been defined.
For Colombian processors, that task may involve green Arabica, green Robusta, roasted coffee or several products handled on the same line. Each material needs its own representative samples and sorting recipe. A result achieved on one coffee should not be assumed for another.
Five inputs determine a sensible machine recommendation
1. Material and preparation. State whether the product is green or roasted, its bean-size range, moisture condition and the equipment used before sorting.
2. Accepted and rejected references. Supply clean coffee, obvious rejects and difficult boundary beans. Name the visible problems rather than using a general request for “high quality.”
3. Working output. Give the normal and peak input required per hour, not only the plant’s daily total. Include the number of operating hours and expected passes.
4. Incoming defect concentration. A clean export lot and a heavily contaminated lot do not place the same load on a sorter. Use samples from normal production.
5. Site conditions. Confirm floor space, feeding height, discharge arrangement, electrical supply, compressed-air capacity, dust control and connection to downstream equipment.
Judge the sample test from both outlets
A demonstration should not show only attractive accepted beans. Examine how many target defects remain in the good stream and how many acceptable beans appear in the reject stream.
